The Miami Poetry Collective is officially (mostly) on Summer Break. Look for more Poem Depots, Cent Journals, and other exciting projects in the fall, but for now, remember: "Do not presume we're not working. Doing nothing is the musing of the poet."

Poetry Workshop: “Sensing the Poem”

Join MPC member and FIU creative writing instructor Nick Vagnoni for "Sensing the Poem," a weekend workshop at The Studios of Key West. We’ll read and discuss a wide variety of poems that engage the senses, and we’ll also spend lots of time writing poems and workshopping our new material. While anchoring a poem in the senses is an essential skill for any beginning poet, more advanced writers will also benefit from this exploration and practice.
Located just down the block from Elizabeth Bishop’s house, The Studios of Key West is a 501c3 nonprofit charitable organization founded in 2006 and based at the Historic Key West Armory.

Poem Depot at Tigertail’s Annual Art & Soul Fundraiser

University of Wynwood Visiting Poet Zachary Schomburg

Zachary Schomburg will present a reading and lead a workshop in Miami as part of the University of Wynwood's Visiting Poet Series. Schomburg is the author of two collections of poetry, The Man Suit (Black Ocean, 2007) and Scary, No Scary (Black Ocean, 2009), as well as co-editor of Octopus Magazine and Octopus Books, both of which he co-founded.

University of Wynwood Visiting Poet David Gewanter

David Gewanter will give a public reading in Miami as part of University of Wynwood's Visiting Poet Series. Gewanter's most recent collection is War Bird (Chicago, 2009). His previous collections include Sleep of Reason (Chicago, 2003) and In the Belly (Chicago, 1997). He was also co-editor, along with Frank Birdart, of Robert Lowell: Collected Poems (FSG, 2007). Gewanter currently teaches at Georgetown University.

University of Wynwood Visiting Poet Melanie Almeder reads from her book, On Dream Street during the opening of There Goes the Neighborhood, an exibition of Miami artists Mary Malm, Brian Reedy, Claudia Scalise, and Tom Virgin. The show explores the idea of “the neighborhood” from divergent perspectives: from displacement and gentrification, to the intimacy of home and family, to physical and human neighborhoods. The show includes works on paper, artists’ books, a painting installation, and a small sculpture.

Luszczynksa, Ph.D.-of Jacques Derrida's essay on the poetry of Paul Celan, "Rams: Uninterrupted Dialogue-Between Two Infinities, the Poem" (2003), while the artists-Dutes Miller and Stan Shellabarger-do a performance of their work, "Untitled Performace (Pink Tubes)" 2003.
